2024 Northwest Territories #3

After much back and forth with Vance and Randy about the route north, we have decided to change our route. We were going to take Hwy 40 from Hinton to Grande Prairie/Peace River, but the road is full of ‘wavy parts’ where the trailer would be bounced around, causing it to be hard to control. So, we opted for a new route of Hwy 22 from Edson, over to Hwy 43, onto Hwy 35 up to Hay River. It’s a great highway, but a bit boring after driving through the Rockies. And it’s hot hot hot..34C and climbing.

We had planned to stay at the Municipal Campground in Valleyview, but it turned out to be a gong show. We unloaded, hooked up to power and water, put the slide out, and … the site had no power. The camper dude next door said the power had been off and on all day. 34C, and no air conditioning. So we start to pack up, but the camper on the other side of us said that he had called their hotline and someone was coming to check on the power source. OK then. Eventually, he shows up, gets the power back on, we unload, unpack, and the power turns off. OK, that’s enough. We pack up and drive off in search of a private campground. Yay, we find Sherk’s! We set up, hook up, and… the power goes off. Okay, it’s now 35C, and we are not having a good time. The owner shows up, and eventually, we get power. Apparently, Alberta rarely needs air-con so the power grid can not handle everyone running their air conditioners in their homes/travel trailers, etc. So, the moral of the story is, do not stay at Valleyviews Municipal Campground, go to Sherk’s Campground. Much nicer but $50+ compared to $35.

We had to turn around and drive back to get this shot.
